MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Peace Valley Nature Center is a 750-acre outdoor classroom where students perform scientific studies and investigations of the natural world. Our trained teacher-naturalists will help your students obtain a greater sense of relationship with and responsibility for their natural surroundings through the exploration of various ecosystems. We work with 10-12 students per teacher-naturalist. Our 2 to 2.5 hour programs can be adapted to fit the grade level requested. A program brochure is available on request or [CLICK HERE]

Our Programs Include:

ADAPTATIONS OF FRESHWATER MACROINVERBRATES Grades 6-12 -- Collection, observation and recording of the adaptations of the various invertebrates found in the stream. A comparison will be done of the macros found in the riffle area to the pond area of the stream. Students will decide on the ecological roles of the invertebrates in the food web by sorting them into functional feeding groups. Stream water quality will be determined by doing a biotic index. Assessment of the factors of water quality will be discovered. 2 - 2.5 hours

ECOSYSTEMS - NATURAL COMMUNITIES Grades 6-12 -- Determine the abiotic and biotic factors that impact the field and forest communities through experimental and field study techniques. Using marked quadrats these factors are recorded and analyzed. Students will discover that natural communities are always changing; how and what factors influence life and what all organisms need to survive. 2.5 hours

WETLANDS Grades 9-12 -- Find out the importance of wetlands! Wetlands are valuable as wildlife habitat, buffers, filtering and flood control. Students will delineate wetland areas by analyzing plants, soils and hydrology. They will observe the impact farming practices have on a wetland and watershed. Students will assess human impact on wetlands. 2.5 hours - 60 student limit

SOIL INVESTIGATION Grades 6-12 -- Through exploration students will sample areas in field and forest to compare horizons, biodiversity and types of soils. Discover the interactions of microscopic organisms and their relationship to the mineral cycle, plants and the world above. 2.5 hours

BIODIVERSITY A World of Difference Grades 9-12 -- Take part in a bio-blitz : Explore the various habitats of Peace Valley Nature Center and list and classify the living organisms found. Discover how much we understand the area in which we live and the interactions of all organisms. What can we do to understand and protect biodiversity and how its importance relates to our lives?
