TEACHER NATURALIST TRAINING

DO YOU HAVE:

6 afternoons, love the outdoors, enjoy being around and teaching children? Then this training is for you! You will learn the programs and techniques we use to bring environmental education to life for pre-school, elementary and secondary students. Completion of this training and subsequent program observation could lead to a part-time paid teacher naturalist position.

NATURALIST WALKS

BIRD WALKS
Saturdays, 7:00 - 9:00 am
Its the coming of spring, so goes the bird migration. March marks the arrival of early migrants such as the Red-winged Blackbird and Phoebes. In mid-April warblers begin to arrive, their numbers peaking in May. This is a great time for everyone who enjoys the outdoors to come birding. This is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning.$2 donation suggested

SINGLES WALKS
Saturdays, 10:00 am - 12 noon
Director Naturalist Craig Olsen will lead singles of all ages for informative walks. Spring begins with renewal, as we search for animal signs, wildflowers and birds. Bring lunch for after the walk. $2 donation suggested

CROAKS & TRILLS
Frog & Toad Search

Wednesday May 17, 7:30 pm
Evening brings the sounds of these amphibians to our ears. The frenzy to find a mate begins. Learn about their habits and habitats as we scour the aquatic areas of the nature center in search of them.

EVENING BIRD WALKS
Wednesdays 6:00-7:30 pm
April 16 - May 28
Join us for the evening as we go in search of warblers and songbirds. As dusk looms we may see night hawks hunting insects. These walks are a great way to unwind after a day at work, or just relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of spring. Bring binoculars. A great time for experienced birders and those who would like to learn about bird identification and habits $2 donation suggested

MOONLIGHT WALKS

Wednesday May 21, 8:00 pm
Enjoy Peace Valley at night! April will bring the antics and mating sounds of green and bull frogs. This frenzy is not to be missed. May beckons the senses with the fresh scent of spring flowers along with the sights and sounds of evening critters. Limited use of flashlights! (Please) $2 donation suggested

TIMBERDOODLING
Wednesday, March 19 ~ 7:30 pm
It' s time again to view the amazing mating ritual of the American Woodcock. Male Woodcocks begin with a peculiar dance and then take to the air with a spectacular flight. Depending on weather conditions, Woodcocks can be active for 15 minutes or for an entire night. Wear dark clothing. We may travel to different areas of the park. NO FEE but advance registration is required.

STAR WATCH

Join the Bux-Mont Astronomical Association to look a the Spring happenings in the night sky. New Location: Watch will be held in the field off Chapman Road, from the parking lot walk towards the bridge, the entrance to the field is before the bridge on your left.



ACTIVITIES & FIELD TRIPS

Advanced registration and payment is required. Fee not refundable after one week prior to trip. Make checks payable to Friends of PVNC, send to 170 Chapman Road, Doylestown, PA 18901. All field trips leave from the nature center at the specified time. Travel is by carpool; all riders pay into the "kitty" which is divided among the drivers.

BIRDING DESTINATIONS

OWL PROWL
Saturday, March 1st,
3p.m. - 7p.m.
We will search Peace Valley for owls, hopefully seeing up to 4 different species. At dusk, we will try to call in some owls with a tape they might respond to. FEE $13 ($9 members)

GARRETT MT. NORTH CENTRAL NJ
Saturday, May 17th
6am - 5pm
We will try a new location to Garrett Mt. in north central N.J., a hotspot for migrants. It traditionally gets 20+ species of warblers in migration, along with other numerous songbirds on their way north to nest. There might be a lot of walking as we search around the lake. FEE $13 ($9 members)

SALEM - CUMBERLAND COUNTY NJ
Sunday, March 23
7:00 am - 4:00 pm
Our yearly trip to the Salem- Cumberland Co. area in N.J. Species we hope to see will be Ross's Goose, Eurasian Widgeon and Brewer's Blackbird. Not much walking involved. Bring a spotting scope if you have one. FEE $13 ($9 members)



OFF-SITE JOURNEYS

Travel (carpool) to surrounding areas to discover natural wonders, family friendly, some hiking involved. NO FEE Advanced registration required.

LAKE TOWHEE
Saturday, May 24
9:00 am - 12:00 noon
Located near Applebachsville in Upper Bucks County. Lake Towhee boasts a wide variety of wildflowers, spectacular birding and interesting, but often VERY wet trails. Wear boots and be prepared for walking in very soggy and wet conditions. If you have time bring lunch for afterwards.

RINGING ROCK COUNTY PARK
Saturday, April 19
9:00 am - 12:00 noon
Join us as we "listen" to the sounds of these melodic boulders and hike to the falls at this gem of Bucks County. Geologic features and formations will be discussed. If you have time bring lunch for afterwards
