![]() The Loudest Among Neighborhood Birds The reputation of the maligned blue jay is largely dramatized. Humans register the raucous screams of their calls because they happen to be the loudest among the neighborhood birds - certainly not as loud as some of the forest woodpeckers or as intrusive as the smaller starlings - while their softer gentler nature goes unnoticed. Often, humans don't recognizze the jays' subtle cooing as a male brings his mate food. Simple calls between pairs during incubation are muffled in the thick tangle of hteir nest habitat and the mating calls of other species. I studied under Grandpa Fools Crow, a Lakota holy man. He said he never bad-mouthed anybody, was never envious of anybody: because if you are, you won't be on the right road yourself, 'cause all roads are good.
